What "grails package" actually does?

It's hard to find Ruby on Rails developers, does the same hold true for Grails developers?  Are there a lot of Grails developers to choose from?

  • We have had a hard time finding good Ruby on Rails developers, and we are happy with our current group today.  But after a conversation with a friend, he suggested we should have used Grails, but I am not sure there are many Grails developers and I'm wondering if they are also hard to find and retain.  Thanks in advance for your response!

I think the more 'niche' you go the harder it is to find developers, however the quality of those you do find will be higher. The Grails framework is probably less popular than Rails, though it might attract people from the Java world interested in Groovy and Grails. Still, I'd think you'd have even harder time finding Groovy developers than Ruby. As a better idea, why do you hire by specific experience and not the ability to aqcuire new experiences? Instead of looking for top Ruby/Rails developers look for top developers period, who also have an interest in switching to Ruby and Rails. After all a great developer will not have a problem to learn a new language and with time he will also learn the subtleties of platform. A great developer will also relish the chance to learn a new language and get paid to do it. Double win for both sides.

The really good thing about Groovy and Grails is that it's a lot easier to turn a good Java/JEE developer into a good Groovy/Grails dev than it is with Ruby/Rails or Python/Django for example. For one because Groovy is essentially a superset of Java so developers don't have to learn a whole new syntax. And then Grails is built on top of Spring and Hibernate, which also makes it a lot easier to grasp. So all in all, even though it's harder to find Groovy/Grails developers as such, there are lots and lots of good java developers out there that you can get really productive in a matter of a few weeks with Groovy and Grails, which is much harder to do with RoR guys in my experience.
