A highly endangered species of great ape, bonobos are humankind's closest living primate relatives and the rainforest of the Democratic Republic of Congo is the only place on earth where wild bonobos exist. There are no species listed as extinct in the Congo rainforest but the leatherback turtle is close to extinction there.
