Answer:
It varies by person... but my brother has COPD, and only one lung, and he was diagnosed over 20 years ago (he is now 64). He's still not on oxygen (he's stubborn, just like me), and he is able to manage his COPD with medication and respiratory therapy.

It depends on the severity of your COPD and many other factors. I am attaching a very good web site that will help understand you condition a little better. If you do all the "right" things you can live a very long life. Here's the site: http://copd.about.com/od/copdbasics/a/copdlifeexpectancy.htm

The life expectancy for COPD Diagnosis will depend on several factors including when you were diagnosed and at 35, you can live for more than 40 years. However, it will depend with how you take care of yourself. Stop smoking and eat healthy. It depends on how much damage has been done to your lungs. But with care and the aid of drugs if necessary, COPD patients can have very nearly normal life spans.

Your doctor didn't give you more details about this disease when you were diagnosed? He/she would have the best, and most accurate information for you, & your individual case. You may want to ask him/her if you can be referred to a doctor who specializes in treating Copd. Sorry, I don't know very much about it, so I can only recommend making an app't. to specifically discuss all of your concerns with your doctor. It might be helpful to write down ALL the questions you have so you don't forget any of them; I know I tend to forget many questions I have for my doctor once I get there... Best Wishes. :)

I have it from second hand smoke from my mother who smoked while she was pregnant with me and then smoked around the air I slept in, ate in, and breathed in every second I lived at home and I've NEVER smoked. So I have an obligation here to remind you to stay a non-smoker so your twins possibly are spared by this too from your second hand smoke and you yourself are still around for them-because girls need their mothers no matter how old they are. I got it around your age and it's been 16 years. With continued medication I plan to be around a good while longer! You will notice you'll feel better and better as your lungs start having a fighting chance now that you've stopped and you take your medication. Not enough oxygen to your lungs means not enough oxygen to the rest of your body. Then everything suffers.

You need to see a pulmonologist which is a lung Dr. That dr will be the one who will explain just how much your lungs are damaged and what medications you should be taking. Be warned the inhaler medicines although, very helpful do carry a risk of more times you may get pneumonia a year. So if you fell chest tightness or slightly ill, go to the Dr right away. Also stay away from others that are sick also. They may put you on steroids which will also lower your immune tolerance, so wear a mask when out in public while taking steroids. I'm sorry you were given the COPD diagnosis. But you are young and can very much reverse some of the lung damage. Stay strong, research meds prescribe, take a notebook to ask and write down answers with. Make sure you PCP gives you the referral for the lung Dr that's most important. It's your body and your health, no one will fight for you except YOU!! Good luck and take care.
