What is fanfiction? how can i write my short story without doing copyright infringement?

  • Ok so i talked to my Literature teacher today about my short story and she told me about fanfiction being a tribute to the story/video game/or movie and its not copyright infringement at all cause your doing a tribute. I dont recall the rest of what she said about it.i have read fanfiction stories before but i dont know what it is specifically besides a tribute and about it. so does anyone mind explaining? also how can i write my story without implying copyright infringement i mean i can make my own characters with their own unique dialogue and story as well as add my own events. i was wondering if anyone had anything other ides as to what i can do?
