How To Pay Bills?

My dog hurt another dog on the street. I'm trying to pay for the bills but I keep getting bills from the other owner, how mush is enough?

  • I was playing with my dog outside my building and my dog got away and attacked another dog, unfortunately the other dog's paw was broken and he had to get surgery. I told the ower that I was going to pay for the doctor and so far I have given her more thank 1,200.00 but the bills she keeps sending are adding up to a lot of money, so far it's close to 4,500.00 she is also making me pay daycare. I know I'm liable for the damage my dog cause and I want to be a responsible owner and pay for the damage but how much is enough? I'm going thru a financial hardship at the moment and I might lose my apartment but I had to use what ever savings I had to pay her at least the first few bills and I'm sending her money when ever I get a chance. Should I put a limit on the amount I'm willing to pay her? I cannot give her what I don't have. Any advise will be very helpful. I now her and her dog are the victims but what can I do to protect myself as well. I cannot pay for ever.

  • Answer:

You were right to pay the vet bills for the other dog. Good Job! However, it sounds like the other owner may be trying to get money not owed to a vet. Inform this person you are not paying him anymore but will pay the vet directly upon receiving a accounting by the vet of treatments given the dog and their costs.

Unless there is any formal documentation, or a police officer, or lawyer have talked to you about forcing to pay, you actually shouldn't be paying anything. What you have is a convenience fee, you are conveniently paying the fee from the vet. You should only be paying for the vet, and you should have had a 1 time bill, or an itemized bill (like a car estimate) from the vet, and you could have asked for a second opinion. If this isn't happening, it sounds like you are being taken advantage of. I read somewhere that in fact, pets are considered to be property, so destruction of said property should be a specific amount (like 60$), and that should be all you are required to pay. Or, I've also heard that your other option, and I know it's way harsh, is that because it was your dog that attacked, perhaps your dog should be put to sleep (or sneakily given to a friend or relative). I don't know, I would talk to your neighbour, and explain your reasonings, explain that you believe that the costs are becoming overbearing. On a silly note, I could totally see this going to Judge Judy. Make sure to keep all your receipts! And always ask for the bill.

I think that's good enough what you paid, you shouldn't be the person getting constant bills. Say to her that you'll lose your house if you keep having to pay for her dog.

You should only have to pay for damage, not everything that has to do with her dog

DragonRider11

It depends on the damage the dog did.
