How long does it take to build credit?

  • I'm twenty years old and I've never had a credit card before. I've never had a a loan or had to pay bills in my name. I have no credit. I'm now looking to rent an apartment for the first time and I need to have credit to be considered for certain apartments. I'm wondering, if I get a credit card, or one of those walmart credit cards that you don't have to be approved for, and I pay everything on time and do really well, then how long will it take to build up credit?

  • Answer:

In most cases, it takes at least 3 months to see the impact of a credit card on your credit history. However, consistent payments running over 6 months to a year will certainly help build credit even better. You can only establish credit getting a legitimate credit card or car loan. After a year, you will have proven your ability to repay. Pay early and keep the balance low. Good luck.
