What is in house nursing?

Selling parent's house before nursing home, what happens to the money?

  • My sister has been living with mom, taking care of her full-time without any financial assistance. Mom is now at the point to go into nursing home, but there is a huge mortgage on the house. Is there a way my sister can get whatever is left from the sale of the house?

  • Answer:

Nope. You or your sister would have had to be on the deed and moms accounts for 5 years Prior to her going to a nursing home. They get everything except life insurance policies. Insurance policies go to the beneficiary. Sorry

There might be a way to get some income from the sale of the house. However, in order for you to claim this amount, you have to get legal representation as the children of the owners of the house. The lawyer should advice you on how to proceed so that you are not left empty handed.

The system is unfortunately set up so the nursing homes strip every available penny from their residents.
