What is a good law school in Northern California?

Will a paralegal certificate better my chances of getting into a law school in California?

  • Having recently receiving my BA in Sociology and a minor in music, would having a paralegal certificate from a community college better my chances of getting into law school? Please keep in mind that my overall GPA is not as competitive as other law school applicants.

  • Answer:

I don't think having a paralegal certificate will increase your chances of getting into law school, regardless of which state you are applying in. Law schools typically focus most on your LSAT score first, followed by GPA, and then any special work experiences you may have had. If you want to work as a paralegal for a year or two before going to law school you most likely do not need a certificate. I am an attorney in NYC now and worked as a paralegal before law school. I was hired as a paralegal straight out of college and none of the paralegals I worked with had certificates. Don't waste your money!

Other answers

I think what Michelle Rego is referring to is a legal assistant and not a paralegal. In most states, certification is required. However, in some states such as California, a certificate is sufficient enough to work as a paralegal. A legal assistant cannot in most states charge for paralegal time. Mind you that there is a difference between certificate and certifcation. I suggest you look up the differences and what requirements your state specifically requires in regards to being a paralegal.
