How do I use ebay to start selling my jewlery online?

If I began selling online, would it be better to create a website or use Amazon/eBay?

  • I'm looking to start a drop-shipping or wholesale business. Would it be better to create and operate a website or sell through eBay or amazon? Own website: Pros- no seller fee's. More customizable Con's- most likely lower web traffic More difficult to create and maintain. Amazon/eBay Pro's- definite web traffic through a reputable seller Con's- seller fee's:(.

  • Answer:

My experience is against sites like eBay but coupling a strategy with Amazon and other aggregators. Ebay and PayPal in general tend to have higher fees (PayPal charges 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, while http://Authorize.net charges $100 setup fee, $20/month, $.10 per transaction which overtime will make it a lot cheaper than PayPal) and if you're selling on Ebay using PayPal, you're going to get hit with fees twice. I recommend using either Shopify or BigCommerce, though my personal experience is in BigCommerce. They have a user friendly walk-thru program right when you sign up to help optimize your site for SEO/SEM and also syncs with many applications and softwares using the "freemium" model, lowering the cost to you. Ebay/Amazon doesn't have these services built in, though BigCommerce will let you export your product listing to all eBay/Amazon/Google and more. Plus, personally, it's a lot more gratifying when something becomes successful that I 100% fully own and have control over.

This question depends on a lot of factors. Are you a developer? Are you good at design? If not, do you have connections or partners? Do you have the knowledge to build your own website? Are you good at SEO, SEM, SMM? Do you have the money to advertise your website? Is the product that you want to sell, unique? If not, what is your unique selling point, is it price? Perhaps you have a great relationship with the dropshipper or the whole-seller? Are you a marketing Guru? Do you have a marketing plan and a marketing budget? Have you figured out the shipping procedure? Do you want to start a very large business right away? If the answer to all of these questions is yes, you could consider starting your own website or perhaps make a Kickstarter campaign coupled with the Shopify competition: http://www.shopify.com/build-a-business to get you started. On the other hand if, you are not sure about what product to sell, you want to have a secondary income and you just want to resell using http://Doba.com or some other dropshipper, you know very little about websites and internet marketing or perhaps you want to test the waters before committing to a larger business, then I would go for the Amazon/Ebay model with a possibility to open my own store alongside it at a later date.
