Is it extremely rare during the software lifecycle to jettison most of the automated test tools, and then?

Software Quality Assurance: What are the advantages for a web-based product to use Functional Automated test tools like Selenium, rather than QTP?

  • Answer:

Selenium*....   is faster.   is cheaper (free).   has better support (open source community)   has no commercial licensing. 2 and 4 go together. They are the biggest problem with QTP, for me at least. Tests are owned by everyone. Developers, testers, product, etc. A developer should not need a licensed tool to debug or write a test. A product owner should not need a licensed tool to read or help write a test. BUILD MACHINES should not need a licensed tool to run your tests in CI. *Note: the Selenium advantages also apply to other open source tools like Watir, Sahi, etc.

The main reason to go for Selenium vs QTP is to avoid huge licensing costs apart from easy integration with other tools apart from QC.
