Need Detailed Route?

What is the best way to map out a detailed route for a long distance walk?

• I am going to be walking across America and I need to generate a route that is very detailed. Like points every certain amount of miles and How far is the next town ect.. Is there a program or website that does this really well? I tried google maps but its not really easy to do detailed mapping. Thanks.
