What should I do to improve my running?

What is the best way to improve my running distance?

  • I'm a new cross country runner and i training for this fall and can barely run a mile with a month to be able to get up to 3 miles, what should i do to improve quickly? I'm willing to do whatever it takes

  • Answer:

Start off pushing yourself to run a mile and a half. Then every week up that by half a mile or so. Run every single day. It takes time, patience, and dedication.

When I trained for my marathons I ran 5 days a week. You need a couple of days for your body to recover. But up your mileage a mile a week.

challange yourself start with half a mile then 30 minutes later try then running a mile then more to like a mile and a half for another 30 minutes and run everyday its gonna take a while it would be pitch perfect the first time, but also remember nothing's impossible the word itself says i'm possible

Set goals! Start first with running a half mile for a week and go up one forth a mile every week. It's flawless plan. I am a participant in many triathlons

Run everyday, start at 1 mile and work your way up. If you can't feel you can run an longer maybe work in a little walk, I think you can easily make your way up to 6 miles if you work hard at it. Xc practice you will end up running longer than a 5k (3.1 mi.) good luck in your season if you work really hard at it you will surprise yourself in what you can do.

One thing you might try is alternating long slow distance (called LSD in running circles) with interval work. As an example on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays run very slowly, but run the maximum distance you can handle without getting winded. On two of the other days per week alternate 30 seconds of all out sprinting with 30 seconds of very slow running, repeating the cycle up to a maximum of 20 total minutes (it might take a couple of weeks to reach that maximum). That gives two non-running recovery days. The interval work increases your speed and stamina (it can also increase VO2 Maximum, but that's another long story) the long slow distance helps with general aerobic fitness.
