When is Mercury out of retrograde?

What does it mean when people say "mercury is in retrograde"? And what effect does it have, if any?

  • I often hear people lamenting "mercury retrograde" at various times throughout the year, and just wondered what was so distressing about it.

    It's an apparent effect because of the relative motion of the planets. We see the planets on the background of the distant stars, and although the planets always move forward around the Sun, because of that background it sometimes looks like they move backwards, or retrograde, from our viewpoint on Earth. It has no significance or effect at all. It's only apparent motion, and if you were to look from the Sun there would be nothing at all. No reason for distress.
