Can I work in France without a visa if I'm British?

Does a person in France on a visitor/spouse long stay visa have to go back to their home country to get a new visa if they gain employment/work permit?

  • I am in France on a spouse long stay visa, due to my husband's work. (http://www.immigration-professionnelle.gouv.fr/en/new-provisions/sheet/long-stay-visa-equivalent-to-a-residence-permit-vls-ts) I just was offered a job and so they are applying for a work permit.  If it goes through do I HAVE to go back to the States to get a new visa?  Or is my visa just upgraded here?  Or does my visa just stay the same, but now I have a work permit? Really hoping to save on the flight... and not getting a straight answer from the internet/French bureaucracy. Hoping to find someone that relates!

Can I ask for more info?  Where are you from?  do you have a visa now because you are married to a french person or because you came over on a tourist visa? I am an american married to a french person.  I came first for 2 months to get married, then came on a 1 year spousal visa, and am applying for my carte sejour tomorrow- it has been over a 1 year process getting all my documents for it. I believe that once you are here everything can be done at your local prefecture- but that depends on your specific situation

Hi, I am not sure with other nationalities, but for an Indian, he must apply the WP from the French consulate in India. He also needs to provide all documents translated to French in India and wait for around 2 to 3 months. Once his WP is approved, he gets visa stamped which will be Long Stay visa (D). Before the end of the 3 months, the person needs to apply for a resident permit. There are agencies like Helma International which help (paid service). I hope this information will help you.
