How can I get short term car insurance (6 months) using my International driving license?

• My girlfriend is interning for 6 months at Iowa currently. She plan to rent a car for her period of stay. Though the insurance provided by the car rental company is very high at 4k/6 months (The cost of renting the car for 6 months is also 4k). Is there any way to get the insurance from the other company provided that she only have International driving license (some company asking for local driving license)?

  The 4K is presumably for the collision damage waiver (physical damage coverag), as the liability coverage carried by the rental company will cover her.  It may be possible, if she has an automobile policy in her home jurisdiction, to add an endorsement to that policy for a rather small amount which would then extend her own vehicle's physical damage coverage to any vehicle she rents.  You will need to check with her insurer but most in North America offer this.  If your home jurisdiction happens to be Canada it will be called the 27 endorsement and will likely run about $20-$30 per year.  If your home jurisdiction is outside of North America this may not be available as your insurer may exclude the US in their policy wordings.  The other alternative is that she could purchase a non-owned vehicle policy that covers liability and physical damage from an insurer in Iowa; which will be substantially more cost-effective.    A few years back my biggest client was a car rental company, they make a ton on CDW.
