  • What is the future of SMS marketing? Will it disappear someday? How about SMS marketing in the USA?

  • Answer:

There still is a future in SMS marketing. Not like the regular spam you get today, but more as a way for brands to build a personal and direct relationship with their customers. Receiving SMS from a brands can feel very intrusive as it is a medium that is highly personal and people only expect their close contacts to send them text messages. That's why getting this right is very tricky, but if done well it will give you a direct access to one of the most personal ways to get in touch with your prospects. Brands can use SMS marketing within certain community efforts for instance. Depending on your brands 'mission statement' you can develop community programs to help your customers achieve whatever their goal is. Weight Watchers developed a weight loss program and sends motivational SMS messages every few days, asking how their members are doing, telling them not to give up, etc. The one thing to remember is not to be intrusive. Make the prospect feel you care and are really helping them.

In terms of a communication channel, SMS isn't going anywhere in the medium term. Have a look at these stats from Portio Research: http://blog.msgme.com/2011/11/18/stats-mobile-subscribers-sms-mms-mobile-im-mobile-email-through-2015/, which shows that SMS will continue to grow through 2015. The reason for SMS's longevity is that it's cross carrier/device, easy to use, installed on to every phone and the best way to get in touch with someone today (e.g. Facebook wants to control security using SMS because email is ineffective: http://blog.msgme.com/2012/06/15/mobile-marketing-news-blitz-june-2012/). In terms of as a strategy, SMS marketing in the future will become less about blasting messages and more about interacting with a customer database on a level of personalized engagement http://blog.msgme.com/2012/05/25/mobile-engagement/. This is to say that the percentage of total messages coming from subscribers will increases related to the percentage of messages sent to subscribers. In addition, SMS will become more integrated with other channels, forming more of a cross-channel (as opposed to multichannel) messaging strategy http://blog.msgme.com/2011/07/28/mobile-marketing-it%E2%80%99s-a-database-strategy-not-a-channel-strategy/. For example, you starting to see more and more email service providers integrate SMS as an additional channel into their digital communication set. This is not to say that SMS will last forever. As network based communications like iMessage, Android Message, Facebook Messenger start gaining more and more penetration thanks to widespread smartphone use and pressure from users, SMS will decline. I would imagine that the carriers have to be thinking pretty hard about how to defend this cash cow, so look for a response from carriers as to what will replace SMS in their revenue portfolio. Getting out the crystal ball, ultimately (let's say 2020), SMS will be a legacy channel used only for automated communications from large enterprise type institutions that are slower to change than more nimble organizations. Similar to how direct mail used today.

The future of SMS marketing basically depends on what new Laws TRAI come up with. Currently with the DND in place the SMS marketing has taken a severe hit. Majority of the middle & upper echelon of society who know about DND have opted for it hence reducing the efficiency. If you have a target audience of middle class to lower middle class then you have a higher success rate for your SMS campaign.   http://www.genesisbm.in/

Hi, I am a bit late with my reply but I just had to post my answer as I have heard this question so many times. Even now if you google anything on SMS uses for businesses you will be flooded with tips and tricks, best practices and everything  that is related to marketing.Unfortunately, I do believe this is rather narrow minded because the biggest use of text messaging is for internal and external operations and logistics and NOT so much marketing. As an SMS service provider, I can tell you that 99% of our customers use text messaging for this purpose and there is a growing need for this type of service. Conclusion: I do not believe in SMS marketing (only a very specific sector of businesses can actually do it properly) but I strongly see a future in the operations and logistic sectors, at least for SMEs.
