Is it common for merchants (or affiliate networks) to allow full access to their product database via API? I want to copy the entire product database (including product names, categories, description, prices) to my own database in order to fit my users with better products to buy. Then, I would like to ask for updates regarding stock availability of products, new products added and products removed from the catalog. Is this a common thing to do? Are there affiliate networks or merchants to allow it? Amazon, for example, only allows the search of products according to keywords. It doesn't allow the retrieval of all the products at once…

Yes you can with some e-tailers. Zappos for example allows you to do this via their API, but as long as you drive traffic to them and the transaction is being made on their site. you can get the entire catalouge feed as long ad the transaction is being made on the referred site. Cheers
