What was it like to go to Marquette University?

What is it like to attend Marquette University in Milwaukee? Why did you decide to go? What is the academic experience like? What are their best programs? What is the social scene? What is it like to live on-campus? I'd like to know more about what the Marquette University experience is about.

It was great! doesn't lie about the cold and food - but, seriously. I had a great time there. To go from living in the burbs to the city was a welcome change - and Milwaukee's turning into a pretty great town. (We didn't have the new art museum and the ballpark was brand new as I was leaving). I went for the academics and location (close to home, in an urban environment). While I was there the academics were great, but sounds like they've gotten even better with the new library and planned changes to the engineering building. Socially, there wasn't much of a greek presence on campus (a plus for me at the time) so I mostly stuck with the group of people I met freshman year in McCormick. The campus is nice, especially when it's warm out, but a huge benefit is having easy access to the city, the lake, and surrounding areas. Tons to explore and I was never bored while there.

What fun questions! I graduated in 2007 from the College of Arts & Sciences. What was it like? Well you get the big university experience, but with personal attention. That's how I felt anyway. Whether it was my college's adviser, or EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) adviser, I felt a level of support my public school friends didn't experience. It seemed they actually cared and would take the time to help. The whole "cura personalis" seems to be something the faculty believes in. Social scene is great with tons of clubs to join, and many university sponsored events to attend, day in day out. I'll just say the night scene is exactly what you would expect for a university in Milwaukee. Plenty to do. I'd say living on campus is the way to go. It keeps you close to your support network of new friends, classes, professors, and campus activities. Speaking of making new friends- the people I met on my very first day have become my lifelong best friends. Not too shabby.

It was amazing. Jesuit-y in the rigorous academics way. I will never forget Fr. Donnelly's Western Civ lectures! Living in a truly urban environment was ultimately a big part of the education. My best friends in the world are friends I made at Marquette. Though I've lived on the West Coast for 15 years, I still tell people how cool Milwaukee is.

When I was a freshman I was not happy with my choice to attend MU. I thought the city was drab, the campus was boring, and it wasn't far enough away from home. Then I realized I was just experiencing the sophomore slump early, shrugged it off, and came to love the school. It's changed a lot since I was there, but some of the important stuff is still the same. The school cares a lot about if and where you work after graduation. All universities say they do, but Marquette actually proves it. Many companies in and around Milwaukee recruit exclusively from Marquette now, due to their top notch grads. Marquette is also a bit unusual in that it runs itself more like a for-profit business than a non-profit school. This means they do a lot of stuff really right that many colleges get really wrong. I heard so many horror stories from friends at other schools about housing mistakes, delayed financial aid, mandatory classes that were overbooked, and changes to graduation requirements right before graduation. I didn't have to worry about any of that. Marquette wants you to graduate, and they build their processes around that objective. Classes were available when I needed them, housing was always available, financial aid checks were cut the first week of each semester, and the school gives you a blueprint of all majors when you enter and you have 10 years to graduate against that blueprint. Any changes made to graduation requirements are for new incoming students, not existing students. They took care of us and helped me land a great job before I'd even graduated. I'll never regret attending Marquette. Also, there are now more breweries than ever within a short distance of campus. With tours. Yeah, it's cold, but it could be worse. It could be Minneapolis.

I would highly recommend going, and echo some of the other posters. It's like a warmer (not in climate), less pretentious Notre Dame. Great academics, great basketball team, cool mix of gothic and modern architecture, and great people. Admittedly, lots of bros go to the school.

Incredible! I cannot put into words how much my experiences at Marquette helped shape who I am on both an academic/professional level as well as personal. Amazing, Amazing Amazing!

Brutally cold and lots of folks subsisting on beer brats and cheese. Excellent academics and people.

I went to study graduate Theology. Chose it over Notre Dame because of the Theology and Society program. A big adjustment coming from Texas (no sun...)
