What is a good customer acquisition strategy for an online retailer planning to break into new geographical markets?

  • My company has got an online as well as a high street presence in the UK, but no experience in foreign markets. In the short term we are planning to establish just an online presence. Longterm, we are also looking at brick and mortar. How would you go about researching European markets? What are good/bad examples of UK retailers who have succeeded/failed in the pure play space in Europe? Why did they fail? What is a good online acquisition strategy for a European launch? How would you go about it?

    The strategy depends on the market you're going to target. The best bet  would be to ask for an advice from a local agency/provider. Here goes an example for a campaign for Russian Market: 1. Traffic campaign: - SEO (Yandex, Google) both for general keywords (i.e. "buy shoes" and product-related keywords with variables "buy iphone 4s", "iphone 4s black in Moscow" etc.) - PPC (Yandex.Direct, Yandex.Market, Google.AdWords, Facebook ads, Vkontakte ads, teaser networks). Both in search & content networks. 2. Branding campaign: - banner campaign in Google AdWords - retargeting campaign in AdWords - depending on the budget: banner campaign on Yandex homepage, sponsored posts in top blogs, i.e. http://tema.livejournal.com. 3. Conversion rates improvement: - proofreading all the texts & emails by a Russian native - website & conversion funnels audit by a Russian UX specialist etc. etc. Hope this helps you a bit to sort out everything!
