How can beer brands add value beyond the original product?

  • In New Zealand beer sales are very flat if not on the decline. This is happening because there are new competitors in the alcohol market such as ciders. Secondly due to the recession people are choosing to spend more money less often (I.e. a higher quality wine rather than on beer). Thinking about brand extension (innovation) such as what Nike does with Nike+ what can beer brands do to increase the value of their brand?

    The beer is a product but the geographical location is an engaging idea. Link the beer to memories of a  local neighborhood or region and use it to drive tourism. Could cross-brand with a restaurant brand.

It may not be about new products but better positioning your current portfolio. Consider a questionnaire that asks questions to assess why consumers are switching beyond just price. For example, maybe wine offers a special experience for consumers and how can beer help create that experience (ie sharing, celebrating, etc). This may give rise to a repositioning, marketing program, or new product...but it starts with asking consumers that drink beer and wine.
