How to implement your own like button in Android?

In the design of Android, why did the designers choose to implement a hardware back button instead of a software back button as in iOS?

  • Answer:

In the most current Android OS, (ICS 4.0) the back button is either simulated or put as a button or both depending on the manufacturer. It made sense early on to have buttons as buttons don't fail when the app freezes. It allowed for you to exit the application or stop a process that wasn't responding. Now since the processes and applications are becoming more refined and able to detect failure of execution, it is possible for the re-addition into the phone/tablet OS.
