Surfing: How can I find a wetsuit to fit?
-
I am about 5'8" and a little over 200 pounds. Yeah I need to lose weight. Surfing would be great for that. But I'm by the Pacific and need a wetsuit. Suits that fit my chest measurement are made for guys 6'1" (like the Ripcurl XLT size). Do I need to get a custom suit, or can I find one that will fit me off the shelf?

Answer:
I was way out of shape when I started surfing, and I used a men's Boz Classic. (Women's sizes stop around 5'10" and 150 lbs. Really? For starters, I've been 5'11" since I was a kid.) I loved that wetsuit and it kept me warm in 29 degree air temps in Oregon. It was a little long for me, but I didn't care - I just wanted to be in the water. And surfing helped me to lose a lot of weight and got me into pretty good shape, so you're on your way. Size chart here: http://www.bozwetsuits.com/sizechart.htm (Looks like an LM might do the trick)

Go to a local surf shop. They will fit you. If you can rent a suit first to confirm the sizing, that would be optimal, because suits tend to fit tightly in the store, but you can get a "stretch" or "expansion" effect of about half a size once you get in the water.

No need for a custom suit at all, most of the XLS (extra large short) should fit you fine. As a matter of fact, you might be able to squeeze into an LS (large short). I'd recommend trying the brands that naturally fit stockier builds (NOT RIPCURL). Take a look at O'Neill, Billabong, and Quicksilver to name a few.

i doubt you'll need a custom suit. i grew up in santa cruz, and i cant imagine every big man-surfer in SC paid for a custom suit. get into a shop and have them fit you for the right suit. also, if you're surfing in norcal, may i just suggest getting a 4/3 suit, sealed, taped, and if you can wiggle in - a diagonal zipper. also maybe some split toe booties. i sound like a wuss, i love to surf - but damn it the water here is freezing! surfing is a great way to slim down, its a full-body work out and you'll be having fun so you wont associate it with sort of being a "chore" to do. if you need a break from surfing, and want to do some strength training on land, try crossfit. i know its "all the rage" right now but in my opinion it is one of the best full-body workouts. you'll slim down, build muscle, and improve other things like balance. Either way, surfing or crossfit, you're gonna work out muscles you probably forgot you had! good luck! http://www.crossfitgoldengate.com/location http://www.oneill.com/
