Startup Failures: Is Color the Gigli of Silicon Valley?

  • Gigli, if you recall, was the movie flop of the year in 2003. It had an all-star cast (Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez) and a really solid team behind it but, for whatever reason, managed to deliver a movie that was so bad it was kind of unbelievable. People went to see it out of sheer curiosity because they couldn't believe it could be so bad and they ended up walking out of it concluding that it wasn't so-bad-it's-good, it was just bad. Color seems to be engendering the same reactions in people. Will Color be thought of as the Gigli of Silicon Valley?

    I wouldn't write Color off so fast. Sure, I've downloaded it and think it's a pile of crap and don't see the appeal. Then again, I registered my Twitter account in early 2008. At that point I decided the service was awful and didn't see the point. The next time I logged on was early 2009 and I've been using it ever since. I do have one thought which is - has a social network that set out to be big, ever been big? It seems like most success stories started out as a way for a small group to do something better and grew through the stickiness of the idea.

If we were talking of another tacky startup backed by desperate VCs then it's clear they are going to die. But with 40MM in the bank they have plenty of money to keep failing for years until they get it right, or Color folds, but in any case they'll still be making 6-figure salaries and have corporate expenses accounts while it lasts.
