paid internships are quite rare for mechanical engineering students.Rather visit some powerplant or some auomobile workshop. You will get plenty to learn.

You can usually find out about internships through your university.  Your academic advisor should know the right person for you to talk to.  Beyond that, depending on your course of study, you should be able to join a student chapter of related professional organizations that will help you. Of course, you need to know something about what you are looking for and be far enough along in your studies to have the knowledge needed to perform the job.  In other words, don't be looking for an internship when you have only completed a few semesters at university. Another option available is coop programs.  These are usually curriculum specific.  You should be able to find out if your school has coop programs.  They are excellent, in my opinion.

Getting an internship is not easy as it may seem. Especially if you are looking paid internships. For them, mostly you'll have to research online and offline on your own, and most of them will have exams as many will be applying for these. Otherwise you'll have to use your contacts, as most internships (which are unpaid mostly) are given by refferals/recommendations.

Apply to big companies that have internship programmes. Not everyone is happy with interns. I never accepted any. They need lots of explanation, mentoring, and by the time they would start being a bit more useful, they leave. I prefer paid graduates, who stay with us. Interns are not free, as the senior people need to waste their time on them. And this is part of the deal, they work for free because they expect mentoring in exchange. It is not fair if we do not spend time with them just give them silly mindless tasks of sorting documents and cleaning mess. Not everyone thinks this way. Some startups and badly managed mid sized companies take interns for free to do meaningless silly tasks and do not explain or teach anything. But that is not worth to apply for. Hence my advice: apply to big companies, who have established intern programmes, set up by hr with clear process to monitor progress and achieve learning goals.
