How hard is it to get into University of Cape Town?

How difficult is it to get into University of Cape Town(UCT) for part-time MBA?

  • Anyone got some information on the amount of applications they receive in relation to how many people they accept?

  • Answer:

The ratio of applications to acceptance is not published, as far as I am aware....although..... I did a full-time MBA at UCT and the entry criteria, which appears on their website, seems to be fairly applied to applicants. If you feel that you fit the profile then you have a good chance. The main areas of evaluation (based on my experience) were your GMAT score, your work experience and your extra-curricular activities. The part-timers were generally more experienced than the full-timers, but this is a generalisation. If you contact the Applications Office or Alumni Office, they are always very helpful and are willing to put you in touch with past students who are local to you so that you can talk in person with alumni/current students and get a good feel for applications, studying etc.... I loved studying there and found it worthwhile on a personal, professional and an academic level.

I did the 2-year modular MBA at the UCT GSB and would highly recommend the course to others. In terms of application and acceptance criteria, well-rounded candidates with sufficient life and work experience to add value to the class group is ultimately what they seek. When I did the course, the youngest class member was 24 - the eldest was 64. Unlike some international business schools, GMAT score is not the most important factor. Your score simply has to demonstrate a base level of numeracy and language competence, and show that you have taken the application process seriously. Any score between 500 and 700 should put you in the frame but lower scores mean you need to be stronger in other areas of your application (e.g. work experience) In the end, your application pack with Gmat score, entrance essays and CV are only going to get you as far as the entrance interview. At this stage, you need to be able to communicate a coherent story as to what you want to get out of the MBA, what has motivated you to do it at this particular school and what value you can add to the MBA peer group. Quick pointers - For GMAT prep, go through the various workbooks as quickly as possible - then do as many practice tests as possible, making sure you properly simulate test conditions and timings (the test really just tests your ability to take tests) - For your entrance essays, think about your overall application story - bring in aspects of your career arc, personal value systems etc. - For your referral letters from previous colleagues and peers, try to get them from the most high-profile people you've ever worked with and ensure that the story they tell supports your application story. - For your entrance interview, have a good story to tell about why the MBA, why UCT and why your own profile and work-experience will enrich the MBA experience for your future classmates.

I’m currently in my final year of the 2-year MBA. One really cannot answer this question without a comparison. How difficult is it - for whom? How difficult is it - in relation to which other university/ies?It’s easier than getting into your “top ten” MBA schools globally, but perhaps only based on the sheer number of applicants. UCT’s MBA classes do not receive huge amounts of applicants, and the “unofficial” numbers I heard applying to each year were all under 500. That said, unless you’re exceptional in some way, you may not make it.It really doesn’t matter how hard it is. You can only get in if you apply. If you’re unsure and the application fee is bothering you, call the staff and ask your questions.
