I am not an attorney, but I don't think hiring someone to find the material is not illegal. Its the actual download that may be illegal, depending on many circumstances.

I am no legal expert but I feel if you are genuinely in need of the ebook then you should be ready to pay the price. I know this is probably not the answer you are looking for but this is what I would have done. Practically speaking, most of the commercial software and ebooks are available on torrents and people are using them. It also depends on which country you are in since some countries have very strict laws against pirated/illegal copies of digital stuff.
