Is Firefox 4 the last version of Firefox?

Is Firefox's ESR version practical for software testing?

  • I found that our QA team was busy testing the latest version of Firefox all the time, since its version number grows rapidly, which may cause compatibility issue for our browser-based application. I know that Firefox launches an ESR version after the 10.01 release, so I'm quite curious: if we decide to support only the ESR version of Firefox, is it practical? By "practical", I'm talking about saving the time and cost for compatibility testing.   Just for the record, we are an ERP company, so there won't be too much trouble if we tell our customers that we only support X browser(s).

  • Answer:

The ESR version is meant specifically to address such requirements. Your customers would get the latest security fixes and you would have a specific browser version which would not change significantly between the sub-versions. When Mozilla switched to the rapid-build and release cycle, there was quite a bit of concern from the enterprise-community around supporting test certifications within enterprise environments. It is for this specific need that the ESR was worked in. http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/faq/ http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2398724,00.asp
