Google Voice (product): What is a simple way to setup a SIP phone on a Mac?
-
I would like to have a 'softphone on my laptop' that I can hook up to Google Voice. I realize that I can use GTalk w/in Gmail as a GV client but I don't always have that open. I'd like a Mac app always running in the backgroud. The research I've done so far is very confusing with lots of SIP apps and lots of SIP servers, but it feels VERY complex to set up. Is there any SIP phone/server combination that makes this simple and more importantly robust? I'm willing to pay for this. Note: I want to receive/make calls using only my laptop. There are TONS of apps out there that let me place Google Voice calls to my mobile phone. I don't want that. I want an honest to goodness soft phone using my laptop's speakers and microphone.

Answer:
You have just inspired me to find a satisfactory answer. It has two parts. The first is to be able to access Google Voice through a SIP account. The second is to get a SIP client for mac. To get a sip server and account for your Google Voice, add your account information at Simon Technologies: https://simonics.com/gvgw/ Make sure to first access Google Voice calling through Gmail or else this won't work. Download the Telephone SIP client for mac (http://www.tlphn.com/). It is free, clean and will ring you when someone calls and allows you to call anyone else Then use the information provided Simon Technologies in the Telephone app.

I have done this but I can tell you it is not trivial but its not like you need to be a developer either. I am also a Windows/Linux user so I cant speak specifically to Macintosh software but I think I can provide some guidance that might get you there. First you will need some software that will allow you to build a virtual machine like Virtual Box or VMWare I used Virtualbox in my scenario. You will build the VM using an iso of PBX in a flash http://pbxinaflash.net/ Instructions for everything you need are on that site. Once the VM is built you will configure it using google voice as the trunk (explained in the documentation on that site) and the you can download a free sip phone (I used X-Lite) to connect to the PBX and Voila! I'd say you can do this is under a couple of hours.

Create an account with http://VoIP.ms and install a soft phone with SIP services. I do this on my Mac, iPhone and iPad + home phone via a linksys VoIP router. Works great for me.
