How to add this library project to Android Studio?

When will Google add the official Bluetooth Low Energy APIs like what Apple have done for iOS?

  • Apple has introduced CoreBluetooth framework in iOS5.x,and now so many apps can operate with Bluetooth Low Energy-enabled devices. What are Google is doing for Android? Right now, so many Android phones (including Galaxy Nexus, HTC One series...) has shipped the dual-mode bluetooth chip (which can support Bluetooth Low Energy), but there're no official APIs. One project called "broadcom-ble" is hosted on google code. However, it doesn't work on the broadcom-chip enabled android phones, because one important .so library is missed in Android system-level frameworks. So, my question is "when will google add the official BLE APIs in Android"?

  • Answer:

As a Bluetooth Smart hardware and app developer It has been very frustrating to see the total disconnect between Android OS and BLE. It isn't hard to see that Google is drawing a proverbial line in the sand with regards to BLE and instead choosing to focus on NFC. NFC has it's pro's and cons, as well as logical applications, however to cut out BLE does nothing but harm the users. We, as well as many other BLE devs, were hoping there would be something in Jelly Bean that would at least make it easier for developers to do something with he hardware that it out there running Android. But alas Google seems to have chosen out, possibly as a way to get back at Apple for it's involvement and drive of BLE as a retort to their push on other Google properties. The battle between mega corps and their proprietary tech is ever annoying and simply marginalizes users from innovative options. But we can all hope as well as continue to figure out ways around it all.

I have a Fitbit One tracker which needs BLE to work to sync with my phone. Fitbit have a great blog item on the problems they are having with BLE. However they have got it working with the Samsung Galaxy SIII & Note II. and are working on other phones. So there is hope that there might be some common work arounds see: http://blog.fitbit.com/?p=665

Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) released in July 2013 has full BLE support with API version 18.
