What Is An Ebook?

What features make an enhanced eBook?

  • I am exploring the latest developments and want to build a list of features that distinguish an enhanced/augmented eBook from a standard eBook. Or is 'eBook' the wrong term entirely?

  • Answer:

The term "enhanced" is still very subjective. Publishers are adding "enhancements" to increase the price of their titles and provide more value to consumers. Consumers will also expect more than just text when they purchase an "enhanced" eBook. Here are the the enhancements you can do today: 1.  Add audio to text 2.  Synchronize audio to text (for read-aloud or read-along) 3.  Add video to text 4.  Add interactions inside the book via JavaScript/HTML5 5.  Add games or Q&A at the end of the book via JavaScript/HTML5 Check out the "I Can Read" books on the iBookstore for all the enhancements listed.

I, too, am looking for criteria for enhanced eBooks - AND interactive books, plus am looking for the best makers of both as i have potential clients, especially for the later. Am researching them, and created a list on Twitter - would welcome your suggested additions. It has makers and some of those who cover this space: Digital Books Go Social: https://twitter.com/#!/KareAnderson/digital-books-go-social

The line is still blurry on most of the ebook terms. I think you've done good in naming the different categories. However, Optomized ebook sounds like a very niche market. A regular ebook is the most basic and doesn't have to be a PDF. For example, Smashwords provides authors a service to create DRM-free ebooks. An enhanced ebook can be a hybrid of ebook and interactive book. If an ebook contains audio or video, it is enhanced. Interactive books are more 'book apps' than ebook. They can provide many features such as A/V, read-to-me, touch, coloring and more. Children's books are a very popular genre for interactive titles.

The company I work for, http://DedicatedTeacher.com, sells only eBooks and other digital products, and we divide our collection into four categories: 1) Regular eBooks: A locked PDF. 2) Enhanced eBooks: An unlocked PDF, sometimes with tools like the "typewriter feature" enabled. 3) Interactive eBooks: Often Flash or html based products that integrate sounds, videos, drawing tools, and more. 4) Optimized eBooks: eBooks designed to be used on an Interactive Whiteboard, such as the SMART Board or the Promethean Board. These categories were just made up by us until some more concrete standards come along, but so far they've been fairly effective in letting customers know exactly what's available. I think the term "eBook" still works, but it does mean different things to different people, and the term "Enhanced eBook" is more subjective still. Please let me know what you find!

I don't think people have figured this out yet. Common wisdom is that enhanced ebook = multimedia. Standard ebook = text. Also channel differentiation further confuses the terms. Most people think enhanced ebook = iPad/iPhone/iOS and standard ebook = Kindle. We're just getting started!
