    What to bring on a day hiking trip in the Sierra Nevada National Parks in the summertime? Definitely a camera!. with lots of memory or film if you still shoot film. A daypack/backpack to carry the 12 Essential Systems. On any dayhike, I start with checking the 12 Essential Systems.  On short dayhikes, I can minimize some systems. On long dayhikes, I supplement some systems.  The 12 Essential Systems are: Navigation (Map and Compass). Maybe add a guidebook or fieldguide Sun Protection (Hat, sunscreen). Maybe add some bug protection. Insulation (extra clothing,) Definitely a windbreaker. It can be chilly in the mornings at higher elevations. Illumination (flashlight or headlamp).  On a short hike I use a little photon microlight.  On a longer hike I have a headlamp. First Aid supplies, including toilet paper. Fire (matches or lighter). Probably not. Repair Kit & tools Probably minimal, knife (or multi-tool with knife) and duct tape. Alan offers a good list.  I would stress the water and sun protection part.  The air is thin and dry, so the sun is strong and it's easy to dehydrate.  Also, make sure you check in on the drought conditions.  Depending on where you are, you might need to plan your hike around easy, reliable access to water.
