What could Apple do about the conflict in the Congo?

http://www.change.org/petitions/ceo-of-apple-inc-make-a-conflict-free-product-that-includes-minerals-from-eastern-congo While the stories coming from the Congo are horrendous. However, can a tech company have enough clout to end such a conflict? What could they do?

Answer:
The easiest thing would be to fastidiously comply with Dodd-Frank Section 1502, which requires companies that use certain minerals to disclose their supply chain and confirm that they are not using minerals sourced from conflict zones. Although the cost might be higher to do so, it can be passed to the consumer who should be happy to pay this premium. If a player like Apple did comply and make such compliance publicly known, it would create pressures for others to do the same.

Apple has made significant progress on conflict minerals over the past five years. For more info, see http://t.co/Yq1GoYu46q Overall, companies should take three main steps: produce fully conflict-free products; trace and audit their supply chains; and help build a certified, clean minerals trade in Congo and the region. Producing fully conflict-free products mainly entails ensuring that a company's suppliers source from conflict-free smelters of the CFS program (http://www.conflictfreesourcing.org/conflict-free-smelter-program/)Helping build a clean trade in Congo can be done by joining initiatives such as Solutions for Hope 1 and 2 (http://solutions-network.org/site-solutionsforhope/), the Conflict-Free Tin Initiative (http://solutions-network.org/site-cfti/), and the Public Private Alliance for Responsible Minerals Trade (http://www.resolv.org/site-ppa/) or, even better, setting up a company's own clean sourcing initiative from Congo or a surrounding country.
