What has been the most surprising royal event of 2010?

What is the easiest possible way to catch a short (1hr) but satisfying glimpse of the final stage (in Paris on the last day) of the Tour de France 2010 without having to make it an all-day event?

For a flat stage, the most spectator friendly way to watch the race, is to get to a bar directly on the race route.  Watch the coverage on TV until its time to go out and watch the publicity caravan.  Grab another round, until the riders get near.  (the helicopters are a big hint).  Watch the riders zoom by, along with all the team cars.  Go back into the bar for more TV coverage, and another glass. Paris, if you can get to the circuit and actually find a place to watch from, you get to see them zoom by repeatedly.  (and in the case of the last day, its basically a parade until they can see the Champs.  Once on the loop, all the sprinters teams turn it up to 11) Actually watching at the finish, won't fit with your "one hour" time limit, it will take more than an hour to get anywhere after the end of the race. (plus the hours you need to be there before the riders get there). Nicks advice of watching the depart is also a great approach.   With sufficient planning, its possible (but difficult) to watch the depart, jump ahead and get to the above mentioned bar in time to get a drink.  (but it requires a day with a route that offers easy access to a high speed road at both ends of the trip).

Go to the stage depart. Going into Paris is never going to be a quick dip. At the stage depart you can see the riders, mechanics, bikes and DS up close. Say hi, they'll be relaxed and happy to finish. You won't get the sense of speed. But all a peleton does is whoosh past in a blur at 35mph anyway. Stage departs are generally always a great fan way to experience pro cycling. Though they'll never beat watching on a tough mountain pass!
