Why aren't Pearson International Edition books allowed to be bought in the U.S. and Canada?

• I'm a European student and we have some books from Pearson. We always have the International Edition. I understand that Pearson publishes a different version for the United States & Canada. Why they do so also seems strange to me, as they are London-based. But what I can't understand is why the 'international' edition is NOT ALLOWED to be bought/sold in the United States and Canada. All the books state that explicitly: "Not for sale in the U.S.A. or Canada", "If you purchased this book within the United States or Canada you should be aware that it has been wrongfully imported without the approval of he Publisher or the Author" So, why does a London-based country make a separate U.S./Canada version of their books and prohibit the 'international edition' to be sold there? At least international should be U.S./Canada included.

  First, you have to realize that for many multi-national companies, international offices are essentially separate companies with a common balance sheet in common. The international version might be a licensed affair where the manufacturing does not meet US standards. More importantly, we now live in a world where customization and personalization is very easy (cheap). So, an international version may have structural or contextual changes. Finally, pricing in international markets can vary greatly such that the international price is not viable in the US at the profit margins sought.
