What is strategic window? What is the example?

What is a typical range for window curtain fullness or gathering?   For example, if your window is 3ft wide, you should install two 3 ft curtains for a total of 6 ft of fabric.  That would give you a curtain to window ratio of 2:1?   How much range does the ratio usually have?  Does 1.5:1 to 3:1 see

  • Answer:

If your window is 6 feet wide, you probably want 6 feet + 6-8 inches of curtain (3-4 for each side) to cover the window and block out the light that leaks around the edges. Everything after that is aesthetic.  It depends on the window treatment / style / etc.

Other answers

If you want the curtains to look good when closed, then I wouldn't recommend going under 2:1. I think 3:1 is a reasonable max. It also depends on the heading, if you have pinch pleat or eyelet headed curtains then you need 2.4:1 at least, if you have tab top curtains then you would only want 1.5:1 as they don't push back easily and will spring back over your window, blocking out all of the light. A door curtain only needs to be 1.5:1 as there is usually an issue with lack of space to push the opened curtain into behind the door. You could get away with 1.5:1 if the curtains are only for show and are never to be closed.
