Does using the archive function in Gmail help with increasing available storage capacity?
-
My Gmail has 7600mb of available space of which approximately 50% is currently being utilised. If I were to archive emails will this increase the space available or can that only be achieved by deleting? I ask because in the case of Outlook etc. at the office, we were always told to archive large emails especially those with attachments so as to increase the available space for our Inbox o n the local servers.

Answer:
No, it doesn't, because archiving simply moves the email out of your inbox, rather than deleting it and freeing up space. From https://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32608 : When you're positive you won't need a message, use the Delete button to send it to Trash. Deleted messages and conversations are permanently removed from Gmail 30 days after you send them to Trash. Deleting unimportant mail is a great way to free up some of your storage, but with Gmail's free storage, you can probably keep those messages, too! If it's possible that you'll need a message or conversation in the future, we recommend using the Archive feature.

No, it most absolutely does not. I archive all messages that do not still need to be dealt with, leaving 0-50 in my inbox regularly. Despite this, I am at 99% of my space, as Gmail kindly reminds me every day.
