What are the best ways to search social media conversations?

  • How can you find out what topics are being discussed in social media?  I have tried Spy. Are there other similar sites?

    (http://topsy.com/) is an effective twitter search engine. I would avoid their "influential" and "highly influential" categories since I am not impressed with their methodology for determining influence -- too heavy on quantity of followers not quality of engagement. (https://www.greplin.com/) is a useful tool to search Facebook. You need to relinquish some personal data to use it, but it is another worthwhile solution.
