Should a small business use Magento Go or Magento Community Edition?
-
The idea of a full hosted solution definitely sound good, but it looks somewhat too limited compared to a self-hosted solution. Expecially regarding theming and design. On the other hand, the Magento Community Edition looks like fully customisable and very flexible, but effective hosting can be a pain. Your ideas?

Answer:
Magento Go. - You can have MAX 10,000 SKUs, MAX 5GB storage. - No access to Magento templates & PHP/XML files. - There are only 17 Magento extensions you can install via MagentoConnect: http://go.magento.com/extensions/ + Hosting is not needed. + Upgrades are automatic. + It is the best SaaS eCommerce system. Magento Go is for small and middle businesses. Choose Magento Go if you don't plan to use any extra features in the future. Magento Community. + No limits (such as SKU number, storage, etc) + Full access to templates and code. + More than 5000 modules in MagentoConnect. - You need to find a good hosting company (we highly recommend http://Nexcess.com) - Upgrades are semi-automatic Magento Community is the most popular and modern eCommerce system in the world.

Magento Go is a paid edition and Community edition is free. That is why I prefer Magento Community edition for small business.

I have tried Magento for 4 months, Magento is a powerful ecommerce system with a steep learning curve, aimed at larger ecommerce sites. However, when developing your ecommerce solution it needs to be about more than technology., let me show you it. Iâve been http://www.shopping-cart-reviews.com/blog/2011/magento-books/ saying for quite a while that if your expected turnover isnât at least $1m/year, Magento is almost certainly not right for you.<a href="http://www.masterlulighting.com/">Brass Lighting Fixture</a> Equally when considering who to implement your Magento solution do not just think in terms of development skills. Magento developers are a dime a dozen. Despite the steep learning curve it is not an insurmountable challenge. The trick is finding an agency who has a track record in delivering a return on investment through solid ecommerce business advice and great user experience design.

Magento CE is a powerful, elegant open source solution, but if you're not a programmer it's going to be a much more expensive option than Magento Go since to launch you'll need to bring on an experienced developer and possibly a designer. You're also responsible for hosting with CE. In my experience it's a best fit for mid to large-scale retailers. You'll be able to create a totally unique store with CE, but if you're just getting started or are migrating from another hosted solution I recommend considering not just Magento Go, which in my opinion needs time to marinate (i.e. integrate with more apps, offer more and better-looking themes) but that you research competing cloud-based carts with strong support and beautiful themes like Shopify and AmeriCommerce. If it's helpful, I've test driven both solutions and wrote a full CE/Go review that covers user feedback, ease of use, and more over on Merchant Maverick: http://www.merchantmaverick.com/shopping-cart-software-reviews/magento-review/

Magento Community is more flexible to customizations but requires more technical skills. It is also free, however you will have to pay for the extensions and modules. Magento Go is easier in management and goes with hosting environment, so in general it is easier to start. But it is for small businesses and it is no customizable, not allowing access to source code. More detailed compaerison of these Magento versions is here: http://www.shopping-cart-migration.com/blog/42-magento/8311-two-sides-of-one-magento
