Does the rel=canonical tag pass social sharing data?
-
It's fairly well documented that 301 redirects do not pass social media sharing data, and that you're simply out of luck if you do a heavy URL restructuring of your site when it comes to preserving your social share data. By placing a rel=canonical tag on a page, do social mentions get passed / attributed to the new page, and do Twitter, Facebook and G+ handle them in different or similar ways?
-
Answer:
I am answering specifically about G+ which does in fact pass the share value to the page referenced in the canonical tag, documented here: https://developers.google.com/+/plugins/+1button/ I have tested and it works consistently Twitter shares often route through multiple diluting redirects and the actual link shared receives the value which is usually traffic, awareness, additional shares etc.
