What kind of jobs are there for a computer science major?

What kind of jobs are available for computer science graduates in Australia?

  • I want to do my masters in Computer Graphics from Australia and I wanted to know if there is a demand for programmers there? I've been programming for smart phones since the past 2 years working exclusively with the graphics pipeline and I really like it. Are there companies in Australia that work on computer graphics?

  • Answer:

There's demand for talented programmers everywhere - certainly with Australia's economy doing ok, there are jobs in Australia. However, compared to the USA, Australia does not have as strong a tradition of development and production. There are games studios in Australia, but we don't tend to create graphics cards here.  And in that sense I would say there are very few if any companies that "work on computer graphics" exclusively. There's a big demand for iPhone and Android development in the business, media and entertainment industries - with your graphics potential you could work on applications that have special graphics requirements. In relation to our booming mining and oil exploration industries - there are organizations that produce visualization tools for geological analysis and simulations for training.  I attended a simulation conference called SimTecT that was full of potential employers - including the Australian Defense Forces. Finally, as an American, you have an advantage in working with American companies - perhaps you could land a job that you can do remotely. You've presumably identified a school you want to attend, and a professor to work with.  Their answer to this question would be valuable.
