How does a radio transmitter work?

I'm looking for a FM transmitter that allows me to play my iPhone through my car radio. Is there one that works especially well or do they all kind of not work so well?

    They all kinda suck, specially in big cities with tons of radio stations, which makes it hard to find an empty frequency for the transmitter. However, I like the iTrip Dual Connect (http://store.griffintechnology.com/iphone/iphone-4/itrip-dualconnect), because it also has an aux jack, so if you ever get a radio with aux-in you can use that instead, while continuing to use the iTrip for charging the phone.
