How much should I charge as a freelance web developer?

If a web developer is offering ASP.NET with Microsoft Access as a package (and trying to charge extra for SQL Server), should I be taking them seriously?

  • Answer:

I've been doing back-end .Net development for twelve years and haven't worked on a website using an Access database for over a decade. I didn't even realise that current versions of http://ADO.Net allowed this. Do some reading on the limitations of using a file-based database engine like Access for a website: http://databases.aspfaq.com/database/what-are-the-limitations-of-ms-access.html If you can pay for .Net hosting, a small SQL Server isn't going to cost you that much more, most should include some kind of database engine. Avoid using Access like this at all costs.

You probably should. No one uses Access as a database - so the only real option in this case is MS SQL. (also, since it’s so well integrated to .net)If there is an extra fee for SQL Server, they probably don’t use just a “SQL Server Express” - that’s for free.If they are using a “SQL Server Enterprice”, they have paid like $14,256 - per core.More likely, they have “Standard”, for $3,717 - and want’s people to pay a little extra to cover the cost of the license.
