How do I correctly move a git submodule?

How do I prevent developers on my team from accidentally reverting git submodule updates?

  • If a developer on a project containing submodules that have been updated does a git pull and then a git commit -a, he will accidentally undo the update to the submodule. Is there a simple way to help guide developers to not make this mistake without using physical force?

  • Answer:

I wrote a couple of git hooks to prevent this problem within our team: https://github.com/chaitanyagupta/gitutils Check out submodule-hooks. The pre-commit hook gives you a warning if you are about to update a submodule with a commit. And during a merge or checkout, the post-merge/checkout hook informs you if the submodule has been updated.
