What is web conferencing?

What is the best open source web conferencing software to build additional services on?

  • Not sure if it exists out there, but given the advances in technology since Skype was formed, I doubt a similar company would have to start from scratch. Is there an open-source or licensed web conferencing technology that a start up can build a product around?

    Check out WebRTC (Web Real Time Communication). http://www.webrtc.org/ Also http://ortc.org/ http://... http://ortc.org/ They're open source and the work that has been put into this resource is astounding. The idea behind the creation of WebRTC in particular, was to create very secure connections over lower bandwidths without additional software. So it works in (almost) every browser. Please get back to me if you are interested in collaborating (joint venture?) to create using WebRTC. My company specialises in Event Conferencing using new as well as old-school platforms, and we have an enthusiastic and creative team here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Communicating is fun :)

Hey there! Great to see you are looking to build your own conferencing solution on top of an existing one. As Luke mentioned, WebRTC and ORTC (as well as Apple working towards support)  are great open source technologies to start with. However, here at Drum we provide the comprehensive meeting functionality to build an existing service around. You do not need to worry about the UI/UX of the meeting area.
