Best free DNS servers?

Is it possible to set up DNS servers on a local machine and ignore router DNS settings?

  • Basically I have free wifi in my neighborhood gate community and I would like to set my own nameservers for dns on my laptop and am wondering if dns will still be looked up by whatever is set at the router level or if my local dns settings would overrule router?

  • Answer:

Not sure why you're trying to do this, but if your goal is to not use the router-configured DNS servers, you don't have to run a local DNS, you can just configure your machine to use an external alternative DNS server such as Google's (8.8.8.8 and 4.4.4.4) or OpeDNS (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220)

Yes First you need to setup a DNS server, such as BIND ( http://www.isc.org/software/bind ) on your laptop. You can set it up to resolve the domains directly using hints from root nameservers completely ignoring your router/isp nameserver. Then you need to setup your network connection on your laptop to use that nameserver instead of the one provided by the router.
