What proportion of mobile phone users can access the web through it?

Can a QR code with an embedded text message work on a cell phone with a camera but no Internet connection?

  • Most QR codes when scanned take users to websites or videos which require an Internet connection. Are there QR code apps that  work to display a simple text message if your cell phone does not have  access to the web or you haven't paid for the data plan on your device?

  • Answer:

Absolutely. All QR Code generators should be able to embed plain text messages with no problem. Unlike some other tag types, QR Codes have the information embedded in the data pattern itself - it doesn't only act as a link to online information. With web addresses, the information is the web address - this is stored in the pattern. It links to the internet when the scanner recognises what it is and takes you there. If you have no internet connection you can always save the code until later when you do have access and use it then.

Yes, there are several proprietary 2D codes that only require a camera to access the embedded message. We're all familiar with this standard QR code, which does need an internet connection to read the code. However, there are several other  2D code formats that may not be as familiar. The Microsoft Tag (http://tag.microsoft.com/consumer/index.aspx) which will work on Windows Mobile, iPhone, Symbian, Blackberry, and Android phones, provided you download the reader.   The BeeTagg (http://www.beetagg.com/BeeTaggSystem/BeeTagg.aspx) is proprietary standard that requires a reader to access the data.   JagTag (http://www.jagtag.com/features), top, and SnapTag (http://www.spyderlynk.com/how-snaptags-work), bottom, respectively, are two proprietary formats that only need a camera phone to work. The user takes a photo of the image and sends it via SMS or MMS to a short code. Users can receive text, video, or images depending on the capabilities of their feature phones. Lastly, there is ShotCode, which requires the installation of a reader to your smartphone. ShotCode was developed in the UK so its use in the U.S. is unlikely, given the other standards that are available and were developed in the U.S. .    In summary, there are QR formats (JagTag, SnapTag) that can be accessed on a cellphone without an internet connection and there are several QR formats (QR, Microsoft Tag, BeeTagg, and ShotCode) that will only work with a code reader and access to the Internet.

QR Codes can do this as well, yes, I will confirm. There are generators like http://www.scanlife.com that can do that for you.
