What job can someone with a CS degree get that lets them travel a lot?
-
Not that its why I'd choose a job, just that Software Engineering doesn't seem to involve much travel beyond the occasional recruiting trip or conference.

Answer:
- Technology Consulting (with Deloitte, PWC etc. ) would be a great place to start if you intend to travel a lot. - You can give a shot at Management Consulting (Bain, McKinsey etc). They do hire quite a few non-business students who are motivated and driven. My personal advice is never take a job exclusively for 'travel' reasons. The fact that you love travel will make your job easier, might not necessarily make it more enjoyable. (a big part of your job is simply more than travelling). Also travel might wear you off, specially when you do it week in and week out for years. (Imagine not being able to do anything on Sunday night so you can catch a 5 AM flight on Monday morning).

Consulting is a good choice. But it usually doesn't involve hard core CS unless you are an established independent consultant. Here is another idea. Get a job in another continent. Let's assume you are in North America. Get a job in Europe, Asia or South America. You will get to work full time and earn good money. But during the weekends and holidays, you can just hop over to a nearby country. This is especially true in Europe and Asia. It's hard to imagine how easy this i if you are used to living in a big country like USA. You should seriously consider Singapore. [Look up Derek Sivers. He moved to Singapore.] Lots or tech opportunities. But you can go to Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand or India in a long weekend. China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand are just a 7 day trip away. Or look at Berlin. You can be in France one weekend and Rome another. In addition, if you really like traveling, you will probably get more out of living somewhere than just visiting. If you want to stay in your home country though, at the least you can get a job in a different city and explore the region. Most techies don't stay at one role for many years anyways. Of course, if you want to go hardcore, you can be a freelancer and live like Tim Ferriss. http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/ Come back and update us!
