Can I make my network private on facebook?

IBM: Could Facebook combine efforts with a big hardware company to make a operation system out of the s. network?

  • What if Facebook could combine efforts with IBM (or maybe Apple) to make a world social network operating system that functions with apps in it, creating essentially the next format of OS. Is this plausible or possible?

  • Answer:

It is perfectly plausible - in fact the future OS would have social aspects embedded in it - Google Chrome with Google+ on an Android tablet is an interesting example; an app built on Facebook APIs on iPad is another example. One important vector in this direction is the PC vs. tablet form factor stratification - while not quite there yet in terms of a social OS, Jason Hiner's observation on iPad[1] is interesting. The social network framework hooks make a lot of sense in context of things like travel, reading, shopping, reviews and so forth. In that respect, a social network substrate for a consumer device by Amazon + Facebook might not be that farfetched ... IMHO, education isthe first industry that could use such a device - collaborative book marking, collaborative filtering, recommendation, working on projects, teacher-student interactions all require a social network layer that has evolved beyond the current primitives ...
