Answer:
End of May to late August - or use crampons to get to the shops and a tracked vehicle to venture out of town. I exaggerate - slightly..

Iceland is a country of unreveiled wonders and magical destinations. It is a land with infinite possibities.I suggest you to visit during Autumn or spring season so as to avoid huge crowds and higher prices. The best time to visit Northern lights is when the sky is clear of clouds. The Aurora is at its best in March or Starting of September. To know more about Iceland check here

In the wintertime, from Late September - Early March. Where there are much fewer tourists and you can actually chat with the locals a fair bit. ;)

September is a decent month for Northern Lights and there aren't that many tourists. I'd say go for it. Prices are about the same though.

Normally speaking, June-July is the best season to go. Because it's the fleeting summertime in Iceland when the temprature is highest and day time the longest. With white nights, you'll have extra more time to spend than tourists in winter seasons. However, as a side effect, summer season will see an increase in the price of accommodation and the number of tourists. So if you want to indulge yourself in the tranquil beauty in Iceland with a relatively small budget, I'd like to recommend you to go at shoulder seasons, i.e. May and September, or even early October. It is the time when you can not only enjoy more discounts of hotels and ticket prices but also encounter the rare view of northern light (for Sept and Oct)!

November was actually a great time to visit for me. Very few tourists or other people on the roads and the southern and eastern parts of the island were fully accessible. Yes, you don't have much sun light during the day, but we had plenty of activities to do at night with locals we couch surfed with.

I live in Sydney, Australia. We have very hot summers and mild winters and never any snow. In the last 30 years we had one morning when there was a frost. When I developed an interest in going to Iceland in 2011 I thought, as a complete contrast, it would be best to go in winter. So I went in February. I could not convince anybody else to come with me to such a far off icy land, so I went alone. I also thought that there would be fewer tourists in winter so accommodation would be easier. I booked accommodation and hired a medium sized AWD car via the internet. For my troubles I got a very memorable and exciting vacation which I will remember and recommend to anybody who wants a comfortable adventure holiday. Here are my bullet points of good and bad:-Good The landscape is very spectacular. Some rocks and mountains solidified from volcanic eruptions less than 5000 years ago. Consequently, the rocks are jagged, sharp edged, vertical. Australia is so old. Everything is smooth, rounded, flat. The people are very approachable and friendly. On the day I checked out of a rented unit the owner could not meet me so she rang and told me to leave the rent and keys on the table when I left. Icelandic place names and people's names have a strong connection with their Viking origins. The owner's name of another rental unit, in English, was "Thor the Powerful son of Magnus". The snowy landscape was very beautiful. Often the black volcanic rocks showed through on the mountain slopes making for dramatic contrasts and great photos. The long winter nights made it more likely to see the "Northern Lights". I had a couple of clear nights and took photos of them which were good. I was correct that there are fewer tourists during winter. In fact I was the only occupant of 3 different places I stayed at. One week after leaving Sydney I was the only person in a guest house near Gullfoss. The nearest building was about 2km away. The internet wifi was good so I could talk to my family in Sydney. It was a very strange and interesting experience to be the only person on the planet to want to be where I was. Sometimes while driving on Route 1 I could not see another car. I felt like I was the only person in Iceland. The snow covered roads were a very challenging, frightening, exciting experience. I felt the car slip a couple of times but was able to recover with the exception mentioned in the bad below. The food was good provided you chose lamb, salmon, skyr, or lobster. The horrible mid winter food was also good in a way as I have been able to tell all my friends how I ate rotten shark known as hakarl in Iceland. Bad Travelling alone was not so good after a week or so. I had thought I would meet travellers to talk to each night. While driving, I slipped into a ditch when I pulled over to let a bus go by. The ditch was completely disguised by a thin layer of snow on vegetation. A friendly Icelander in a monster Jeep came by and pulled me out within 30 minutes but when the car slipped off the road my heart was pounding. I thought it was going to roll.

While winter can be a spectacular time to visit, temperatures can plummet as low as -30°C, particularly in northern Iceland, with December to February the iciest months. Wind chill can make apparent temperatures feel even lower. Don't avoid Iceland in winter but pack proper thermal gear.

Winter time is absolutely undervalued. Most of people can not find of winter beauty so it is why Iceland and other countries are not visited in winter time. But we tour operators in Iceland, are noticed that tourism is increasing right here 66 degrees north.

May-June for the best combination of good weather and off-peak crowds/prices. Source: http://planmy.travel/index.php?route=tninja%2Fblog%2F1025
