What is a bounce rate and where do we use it?

What does it mean when your Returning User bounce rate is higher than your New Visitor bounce rate?

  • I'm trying to do some web analytics on a friend's site.  at the roadblock/sign in I noticed a high bounce rate (70%) for returning users, but a decent bounce rate (40%) for New Users.  How is this possible?   I would think any returning visitors would generally not bounce as often because they came back to the site in the first place.

  • Answer:

Are you tracking sign in errors? Do you have a "forgot password" option? This could be indicative that users found value in the site but the obstacle to log in may be preventing them from doing so. The obstacle could be because they forgot their login credentials and there is no way to retrieve them, or it could be because whatever purpose this site serves they don't feel needs the extra effort to log in. For an example of the latter point, think of Social Readers on Facebook.

As you may already know, its a complicated science if any but it could be a number of reasons mostly based on what the site is all about. It will be hard to make a guess without more details, what kind of site is it and whats the goal - meaning how do you measure conversion? Comparison engines or product reviews sites tend to have similar trends.
